Domestic Abuse
Domestic Abuse
Recognising abuse, finding safety and accessing support when living with sight loss.
In the UK domestic abuse is known to affect 1 in 6 men and 1 in 4 women in their lifetime, millions each year and currently claims the lives of two people each week.

Domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, background, or circumstance. At Herts Vision Loss, we recognise that people living with sight loss may face additional risks and barriers when seeking help. We are committed to ensuring that everyone in our community can access safe, inclusive, and confidential support. In Hertfordshire, support is available not only for those experiencing abuse, but also for friends, family members, and professionals who want to help.
You are not alone
Domestic abuse is not always physical. It can include emotional, psychological, financial, and controlling behaviour. If you feel frightened, isolated, or controlled by someone close to you, support is available.
People with vision loss may be at increased risk of abuse as they have greater dependence on a partner or caregiver; barriers to communication or accessing help; increased social isolation or be subjected to financial or practical control by others.
Abuse may also involve withholding care, medication, or access to essential equipment. It is important to recognise that this is abuse, and support is available.
If something doesn’t feel right, it’s important to know that help is available and you deserve to feel safe.
