Sight Life and our Waterways Experience!

On Tuesday the 26th June our Sight Life groups got together for a wonderful day out with Waterways Experience in Hemel Hempstead. It was a lovely day with a delicious fish and chip lunch. The crew were great fun.  They encouraged us to operate the locks and steer the boat.  Everyone on board had the chance to have a go. Tommy, who is one of our blind service users and also a member of the Sight Life Welwyn group did really well as he operated the boat and safely steered us down the canal.

The whole day was idyllic.  We cruised along in the sunshine and appreciated all our surroundings.  The four hour canal trip took us all the way down to Hunton Bridge, where we operated three locks.  This was a new  experience  and our Sight Lifers really worked hard and showed great team spirit.

Waterways is a registered charity based in Hemel Hempstead. They operate three large canal boats from a beautifully landscaped boatyard on the Grand Union Canal just south of Hemel Hempstead. – https://wexp.org.uk/

All the boats are designed to provide easy access for people who have a disability.  They have ramps and lifts and plenty of turning space for wheelchairs. We will definitely be using Waterways again!

Getting to our events and trips is now easy due to our minibus. We were very grateful when we received a donation from the Clothworkers Foundation to purchase it.  Or Service users really like traveling together and it makes our trips even more special.

We have lots of fun and interesting things planned for the rest of the year, including our Big Picnic event on 8th August.
