The majority of people on the Herts Vision Loss database are over 65, many of whom also have other problems, e.g. hearing impairment and/or mobility. We aim to help with reducing the social isolation and loneliness of this vulnerable group of people and to provide assistance with their daily living needs.
We have a small, dedicated professional team and we work with around 130 – 140 volunteers. The majority of our volunteers help to deliver our frontline services of home visiting, hospital information and equipment outreach and a small number help us with office/fundraising and clubs. Many of our volunteers are themselves sight impaired and this helps to grow both community capacity, whilst helping individuals develop skills (for example teamwork and communication) together with self confidence and a feeling of self worth.
We provide help and advice in low vision and eye clinics in six hospitals throughout the county.
As well as our central Resource Centre, we take equipment out into the community through our Sight Information Points and various equipment exhibitions & events.
